Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are two terms used interchangeably to describe the same health disorder. This condition is considered part of a category called neurodevelopmental disorders and is observable in childhood. It is characterized by a variety of symptoms and behaviours, which collectively make up the condition. Some of these symptoms include chronic issues in multiple areas of one’s life with inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity and procrastination.
Most substantiated causes appear to fall in the realm of neurobiology and genetics. Attention disorders often run in families, so there are likely to be genetic influences. Studies indicate that 25% of close relatives in the families of ADHD children also have ADHD, whereas the rate is about 5% in the general population. Many studies of twins now show that a strong genetic influence exists in the disorder. There is little compelling evidence at this time that ADHD can arise purely from social factors or child-rearing methods. This is not to say that environmental factors may not influence the severity of the disorder, and especially the degree of impairment and suffering.
Other theories to the causes of ADHD that have been studied include smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy and the study of Brain injuries, and food additives.
ADHD can overlap or co-exist with a variety of other disorders such as – Aspergers Syndrome, Bi Polar, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Learning Disorders, Tourette Syndrome, Anxiety, Depression, and Borderline Personality Disorder. Thus a diagnosis should be conducted by a professional in the field for example a Psychiatrist or Psychologist who understands the aforementioned and who is proficient in ADHD. The professional should also perform a detailed interview with patient , teacher, spouse and family members as a way of collecting as much data as possible.
Finally, the professional should utilize an assortment of tools specifically designed for the diagnosis of ADHD. These tools consist of check lists –“ASRS”, self/observer rating scales – “CONNORS”, and continuous performance tests such as the “TOVA”.
ADHD if not diagnosed and managed appropriately can have a devastating impact on an individual, their relationships, family, social life and work.
ADHD coaching has been developed and refined over many years in order to identify, educate and manage problematic components impacting on the aforementioned areas. These components include distraction, impulsivity, procrastination, time management and lack of motivation to mention just a few.
Coaching can be delivered in an individual, group or family setting in order to form a better understanding and management of the problematic behaviours impacting the individual, their networks and relationships.
